May marks month for moms and manuscripts

Writers socialize via Zoom and Cab Tran speaks on subplots

May is a month of contradictions, not quite spring but still not quite summer. Holidays include Mother’s Day, National No Pants Day and Dance Like a Chicken Day. So everyone has something to write about at the May 10 Fremont Area Writers (FAW) Zoom Social Write-In.

Writers will create a poem or story in a low-key environment. The computer randomly assigns four writers to each Zoom room and gives them several prompts. Writers choose one and write whatever comes to mind for 10 minutes. At the end, each person reads their response. Because writing time is short, there is no expectation that the result will be polished or even complete.

After the readings there is time to chat. Writers are then reassigned to a different Zoom room with new people and a new challenge. After the second writing period, stories are again shared.

In addition to the Write-In, FAW meets on Zoom on the fourth Saturday of each month to hear a speaker discuss some aspect of writing.

The May 24 speaker is Cab Tran, co-editor and translator of the anthology The Colors of April (Three Rooms Press) about the Vietnamese diaspora in the wake of the Vietnam War and the co-founder of the literary magazine Cedilla. He will speak on when and how to use subplots in fiction.
