Old-timey theater supports East Bay’s future filmmakers

Short film fest of all-local work returns to Castro Valley

Throughout the year, The Chabot Theater on Castro Valley Boulevard screens old favorite films along with new releases. When films aren’t taking up the big screen, people come for bingo, movie trivia and watch parties.

At the beginning of November, the theater features the short works of filmmakers from around the Bay Area, including students in grades K-12. This year’s Locals Only Short Film Fest will take place on Nov. 6 and 7.

Alex Largusa, co-owner of The Chabot, shared that each year, they have received more submissions. “With more submissions comes more agonizing over which films we select for screening,” he said, “and this year’s festival certainly felt the toughest to program. Because we had to turn down so many incredible short films, the ones that were selected feel very special to us, and we’re so excited to share them with the audience!”

Friday kicks off the festival at 7pm with the music video block. The festival continues Saturday afternoon with the student block at 2pm, and picks up again at 6pm with the main narrative / documentary block. People can attend the category of their interest, or purchase a pass for the entire weekend. After each section, the filmmakers will be available for Q&A with the audience. Plus, there will be awards for the submissions, including an Audience Choice Award.

“The filmmaking scene in the Bay Area is more vast than I think people realize,” Largusa shares. “We have absolute professionals, truly visionary filmmakers, and a vibrant indie scene, and many local filmmakers I’ve talked to describe it as much more down to earth and enjoyable than the film scene in LA. The Bay Area is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it’s rich with culture; it’s no wonder that this place inspires such creativity within its residents.”

Largusa encourages attendees to follow the creators on their Instagrams and other social media platforms to see updates and opportunities to support them throughout the year.
