Yarn gets new life

After city instillation, donated yarns become quilts

For Arts, Culture and Creativity Month in April, community members submitted crocheted squares for a yarnbombing display at Fremont Main Library and Fremont BART Station. After the displays were taken down on May 1, the fabric pieces were washed and combined into seven blankets, four large and three child-size, which were donated to Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments (SAVE).

CREATING COMFORT ‘We are thrilled that the beauty and energy evident in the original installations will carry on as blankets for clients of SAVE,’ says Susan Longini, member of the Fremont Creates Steering Committee.

“What began as a temporary public art installation created by the hand-crafted donations of many individuals, has taken on a second life after the exhibition was completed,” says Lisa Stambaugh, a member of the Fremont Creates Steering Committee. “It was very meaningful to me to combine them in a way that provides comfort, warmth and a reminder that people in our community care about each other.”
