Piecemakers come together with community

Nonprofit group raises funds through fabric sale

Fabric. Baked goods. Crafts. Raffles. Quilts. Cars. The Piecemakers Quilt Guild is well into their 2026 activity, and with a May 30 fabric sale they hope to raise funds to cover the nonprofit’s basic expenses for the next several years.

“We’ve had quilt shows before, and we’ve had fabric sales before, but we’ve never had everything all together,” says show organizer Toni Mathues.

The main purpose is a “colossal” fabric sale, but Mathues clarifies that people don’t have to be quilters to attend the free event. Crafters across many hobbies can make use of fabric, and there’s also a boutique with pre-made items for people who want to support local makers. A bake sale brings a little sugar rush. Plus, out in the parking lot there’s a car show organized by guild member Wanda Paulson, inspired by her son’s interest in cars.

The event will also include a show of quilts made by members, but they’ve kept it small—both in number and in size. In the past, shows have featured 130 quilts with members needing to climb ladders to hang bigger pieces. The sale will have 30 small quilts on display, and no climbing.

Piecemakers will continue their work through the year. In July and December they will donate quilts to local community organizations such as Viola Blythe and Newark Police Department. And they’ll be at Ardenwood Historic Farm for July 4, holding quilt-tying demonstrations.

One unique part of the May fabric sale is that it invites in people who may not have much knowledge of quilting. “When you invite the public, it opens all sorts of other doors,” says Mathues. “People get to see your guild and go, ‘Oh, I’d like to know more.’ That’s why I really wanted to open this up to the outside.”
