Ohlone Summerfest returns with ‘Urinetown’

Satirical comedy is a tribute to musical theatre

This July, Ohlone College invites the Tri-City community, and musical theatre lovers throughout the Bay Area, to its annual Summerfest. Over five days in mid-July, Ohlone’s award-winning Theatre and Dance Department will present Urinetown: The Musical! A sidesplitting comedy of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

“Summerfest has a long and cherished history at Ohlone, spanning decades with strong institutional support and a fruitful collaboration between the theater and dance department, and the Smith Center,” said Michael Navarra, director of theatre at Ohlone College.

He continued, “Throughout the show, you’ll recognize homages to classic musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Les Misérables and more.”

The Tony Award-winning musical written by Greg Kotis envisions a dystopian city where people must pay to use public restrooms. Kotis conceived of the musical while traveling through Europe on a tight budget, finding himself in need of a restroom at an inopportune moment. His only option? A pay-per-use public toilet that he couldn’t afford, which later sparked the concept for the show’s hilarious premise.
