Newark voters re-elect Mayor Michael Hannon

Grindall, Little Win City Council seats

In a clear victory, Newark Mayor Michael Hannon was re-elected with 63% of the vote in a competitive three-way race. 

Hannon has held the office of mayor for two years. He campaigned on a platform that called for reducing crime rates and increasing funding for local schools. In his next term, Hannon says he will prioritize Newark’s economic challenges and hopes enhance public transportation and support Newark’s small businesses amidst an economic downturn.

Hannon worked for the City of San Jose for almost 27 years, spending his last 10 years there as a lead official in the code enforcement and planning department. After retiring, Hannon was was appointed in 2013 to the Newark Planning Commission.

In 2014, Hannon was elected to the City Council and served as a council member for eight years before becoming mayor.

Joining the Newark City Council with a background in urban planning, former Assistant City Manager Terrence Grindall led the field of candidates to win a full term.

Grindall’s campaign touted his deep experience in city management, promising to implement smart city initiatives that focus on technological enhancements to improve municipal services and infrastructure.

Mother, teacher and community activist Eve Marie Little won a race to fill the remaining two years of an unexpired at-large Newark city council term vacated in June by Mike Bucci, who stepped down citing housing insecurity issues. 

Little’s campaign promoting “kindness and positive energy,” coupled with a strong focus on enhancing public safety. Little pledged not to accept any contributions from businesses or unions, emphasizing her commitment to grassroots support and independence.
