It’s that time of year when people will soon receive massive amounts of mail, email, social media posts and TV ads—a sure sign that election season is soon. The League of Women Voters will hold 2026 election year programs, designed to help voters make informed decisions and have confidence in their choices.
A Sept. 12 forum will cover the Alameda County Elections Commission (EC) with guest speaker Irene Dieter, president of the Alameda County Elections Commission and a long-time member of the League of Women Voters in Alameda. This group of 13 dedicated and civically engaged community volunteers is charged with overseeing all federal, state, district and municipal elections conducted by the county’s Register of Voters. Dieter will describe the role of the EC—why it was formed, what issues they deal with and how complaints are resolved.
Also on the program will be Dr. David Renfro, speaking on Veterans For All Voters, a non-partisan initiative that works specifically with veterans in civic engagement, voter education and community leadership. Renfro is a military veteran, having served in the Navy as a hospital Corpsman. Upon leaving the military, he earned a doctorate in nursing practice and worked for 40 years as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto.

On Oct. 17, there will be a lecture on ballot measures. There are more than 15 initiatives on this year’s ballot, including California State propositions, and local measures. The League of Women Voters will explain the pros and cons of the major propositions and measures.
While specific dates, times and venues are still being determined, the League of Women Voters will once again host candidate forums. This is the public’s opportunity to observe how competing candidates answer pertinent questions about themselves and about their positions on a variety of issues. Candidate forums will occur during the month of October. Watch for updates on lwvfnuc.org.
