Make word magic

Katherine Sherbrooke knows editing is where the magic happens

You’ve completed a draft of your book. Congratulations on this solid achievement, but good as it feels, your story is still in its infancy. Before it can meet the public as a mature, captivating book, it needs to be shaped, trimmed of excess detail, polished, and perhaps even torn apart and reorganized. This is not something AI can do for you.

The good news is that on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Fremont Area Writers Zoom meeting, author Katherine Sherbrooke will discuss strategies and tactics for taking an infant draft to the next level of maturity to make it as excellent as it can be.

Sherbrooke describes this process of revision and self-editing a raw manuscript as being similar to a sculptor working with clay. “Once we have the clay laid out on the table, we can begin to sculpt it into something that matches your vision,” she says. It is in this shaping and sculpting process where the magic happens, and word-clay matures into something enticing that others will want to read.

Katherine Sherbrooke is the award-winning author of four novels: Leaving Coy’s Hill, a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award and a New York Times notable book; Fill the Sky, winner of an Independent Press Award; and the historical fiction, The Hidden Life of Aster Kelly. Her most recent book, This Much is True, was released in mid-September 2026.

Fremont Area Writers is one of 20 branches of the California Writers Club. It sponsors speakers, write-ins, and a salon on Zoom. All Zoom meetings are free, and writers of all levels are welcome. They need not live in Fremont to attend.
