Writing in a flash

Robert Siegel teaches how to craft flash fiction

The challenge of flash fiction is to tell a complete story using a limited word count. The story may be as long as 1,500 words or as short as Ernest Hemmingway’s famous six-word flash fiction, “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.”

In preparation for the Fremont Cultural Arts Council/Half Price Books flash fiction contest, Fremont Area Writers will host Robert Anthony Siegel speaking on strategies for writing flash fiction at their Aug. 22 Zoom meeting. His talk will include examples of successful flash fiction and resources for writing and publishing in this genre.

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Siegel was fascinated by Japanese, became fluent in the language and received a degree in East Asian studies from Harvard followed by an MFA from Iowa Writers Workshop. Currently he teaches online for Stanford’s continuing education program and coaches emerging writers.

Fremont Area Writers meetings are free and writers of all levels are welcome. Participants do not need to live in Fremont to attend.

More information is available at cwc-fremontareawriters.org. To attend a meeting, request the Zoom link from Scott Davidson at sc**************@***oo.com.
