New Haven Schools Foundation awards record amount in scholarships

Funds support students and educators in Union City schools

The New Haven Schools Foundation (NHSF) awarded a record-breaking $294,500 in scholarships to 160 students through its 2026 “Pathways to Success” program, and an additional $94,000 in grants to teachers of the New Haven Unified School District.

Founded in 1981, NHSF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to enriching educational opportunities and supporting the students, teachers, and schools of the New Haven Unified School District.

Through the community-based scholarship program, which helps provide financial aid to graduating seniors, individuals have received scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 to help fund the cost of college and trade schools.

“This scholarship program is a powerful story of what a caring community accomplishes when working together,” said NHSF Executive Director Helen Kennedy. “Every year, individuals, organizations, and businesses in our community join together to help open doors for local students pursuing higher education dreams. We all believe in the power of education to change lives.”

Students accepted their awards at a luncheon and ceremony on May 13 at James Logan High School in Union City.

The Art and Cheryl Kuhlman Award were awarded to the Senior Management Team of the City of Union City. For over a decade, individual members have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to helping local students pursue higher education.

On Tuesday, May 12, the New Haven Schools Foundation awarded $94,000 in funding to classrooms in the New Haven Unified School District. The projects reflect a vast range of education-enhancing programs, including STEM programs, literacy materials, historical re-enactments, teaching aids for students with special needs, computers and technology, books, education software, and much more.

Since 2009, the Foundation has made 494 dreams come true for local teachers with great ideas for innovations in education, totaling almost $800,000.

“Teachers are at the heart of student success, and our grants program is designed to give educators the resources and opportunities they need to inspire learning in meaningful and creative ways,” said Michael Ritchie, president of the New Haven Schools Foundation.
