A local Parent Teacher Association (PTA) program became recognized by the national PTA organization for being a “School of Excellence.” Mattos Elementary PTA is one of over 300 schools to receive the recognition. They are the only school to receive it in Fremont Unified School District. The title lasts for two years.
The national program aims to encourage PTA organizations and schools to work together to increase impactful family engagement. The program consists of gathering feedback from parents, teachers, students and staff about goals and events they want to organize for the school year.
PTA organizations organize events, fundraisers and sometimes offer financial support for school building improvements.
Mattos principal Sherea Westra sent a letter to families through a parent portal called Parent Square announcing the recognition. The key to their success includes collaborative efforts in science enrichment, positive behavior support and interventions, family engagement nights and fundraising. The association currently has 272 members. Mattos Elementary is the only science magnet school in Fremont, serving transitional kindergarten to fifth grade students.
