This year, the theme for HERS Breast Cancer Foundation’s Walk/Run fundraiser is “Hope is Our Superpower.” (Fittingly, “Hope” is the H in HERS.) This is the 27th time the event has been held to raise money for the mission of supporting post-surgical breast cancer patients, and the run will be at Quarry Lakes with flat trails that are accessible for both runners and walkers across ages and abilities.
Teams are encouraged to dress up as their favorite hero, super or otherwise. (Dolly, anyone???) People can sign up for a 5K walk (in person or virtual), 5K timed run or 10K timed run. Of course, there will be prizes for the best costumes.
This year, there will be a Bollywood dance warmup, and a continental breakfast for participants provided by Banter Bookshop. Before the run, people will gather for Elaine’s Memorial Circle, where survivors can share their name and how long they have been a cancer survivor.
After the run is the community expo, with healthcare and wellness partners, local businesses, nonprofits, entertainment and a raffle. Everyone who registered is entered in the raffle automatically.

It takes a lot of sponsors and volunteers to make the event happen. HERS especially thanks Legacy Sponsor Fremont Bank and Elite Sponsor Beverly Hagan Certified Public Accountant for the continued support.
Marcelle Kozocas, a breast cancer survivor who does outreach for HERS, says she plans to do the walk portion and also be in charge of the photo booth. She and her team have their costumes planned. “We’re going to be the Captains of Courage,” she said. “We’re going to be creating big Captain America shields…My friends like to go all out with me and dress up with me so I’m excited.”
HERS is still looking for volunteers to help on Friday or Sunday with setup, breakdown and course monitoring. High school students can earn volunteer hours. For more information, call 510.790.1911 x104 or email in**@*****cf.org.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so check the calendar for more awareness and fundraising events.
