History museum focuses on Asian Americans

Programs teach about Asian and Pacific Islander cultures

The Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS) invites families to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander culture at the HAHS Museum of History and Culture. On Saturday, May 16 at 11am, families can attend a special story time focused on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Following story time, children can participate in age-appropriate crafts and activities from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

Learn about Hayward artist Hisako Hibi, who was incarcerated at Tanforan and Topaz during World War II. Her art during that period focused on documenting the landscapes around her and creating art from found objects. Children will have the opportunity to create their own versions of Hibi’s art.

In addition to this drop-in program, local artist Ruey Syrop will be teaching a children’s watercolor class from 12:30 to 2:30pm the same day. Registration is encouraged for this activity as space is limited. Register at haywardareahistory.org.

The HAHS Museum also has two exhibits celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Hayward. The History Gallery features 150 objects that tell the story of Hayward’s history, while the Art Gallery features artists’ interpretations of 150 years of Hayward’s history.

The HAHS Museum is on the second floor of 22380 Foothill Blvd. in Hayward. The Museum is open from 11am to 3pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
