Supporting seniors in Union City

Meals, movement and meaningful connection at Ruggieri Senior Center

At the Ruggieri Senior Center, something special is happening each week. Through programs offered by Spectrum Community Services, local seniors ages 60 and older are finding new ways to stay active, nourished and engaged in their community.

Spectrum offers Fall Prevention classes at the center to help participants improve strength, balance and confidence—key factors in reducing the risk of falls. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but they are not an inevitable part of aging. With the right tools and support, seniors can stay active and independent longer. To sign up for Fall Prevention classes, call 510.876.8809.

Volunteer Appreciation

Behind every class and every meal served is a dedicated team of volunteers. This April, during Volunteer Appreciation Month, Spectrum Community Services shone a light on the incredible individuals who make these programs possible.

Right now, there is an urgent need for volunteers at the Ruggieri Senior Center in Union City. In particular, meal service volunteers are needed Monday through Thursday from 11am to 1pm. Those interested should call 510.916.1381.

Volunteering is also a powerful way to give back locally, meet new people and be part of something bigger. Many volunteers say they receive just as much as they give.

More Than a Meal

Spectrum’s Senior Meals program provides fresh, hot lunches designed to nourish both body and spirit. In a region where the cost of living continues to rise, these meals offer critical support for older adults living on fixed incomes. Meals are prepared from scratch and served in a welcoming, social environment where participants can connect with friends and meet new people. For many, it’s the highlight of their day.
