Union City is commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 events, specifically a United Airlines flight headed to the Bay Area.
Union City is honoring heroes that were in Flight 93 on Sept. 11 at 10am at Sugar Mill Landing Park, at the corner of Alvarado-Niles Road and Dyer Street. The location is where a Flight 93 memorial stands.
There are 40 granite stones with the names of people who were onboard the airplane and died. The memorial was completed on Dec. 8, 2007, several years before the Flight 93 National Memorial was built in Pennsylvania.
On Sept. 11, 2001, a United Airlines Flight 93 plane bound to San Francisco was hijacked by terrorists. The plane was allegedly going to crash into the U.S. capitol as part of a terrorist mission. Passengers and flight attendants made a heroic attempt to divert the plane. The plane ended up crashing in Pennsylvania, killing all the passengers.
Those who are attending should make sure to arrive early, because there will be a moment of silence at 10:03am, followed by the Flight 93 story, reading of the victim names and special tributes.
