Two flag football teams reach playoffs

James Logan and Moreau Catholic made their way into MVAL playoffs

Two of three high schools in the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) that have women’s flag football teams made it to the CIF North Coast Section playoffs this season.

The No. 6 James Logan Colts of Union City went against No. 11 Redwood Giants of Larkspur in round one of the Division I bracket. The Colts’ season would end in Larkspur, however, losing 21-6.

Junior Navlynn Thomas recorded four receptions, 92 yards, and a touchdown in the third quarter to put the team on the board, but it was too little, too late.

Sophomore quarterback Annaliese Pyle scored two touchdowns for the Giants, along with 168 yards through the air and 136 yards on the ground. The dual-threat quarterback proved to be a problem for the Colts to keep up with.

The Colts finished the season 17-6. They started the season off strong, not allowing a point to be scored for five straight weeks.

They took on the Castro Valley Trojans in the West Alameda County Conference Championship on Oct. 24, where they lost 46-7. The Colts struggled against the Trojans, losing to them in all three matchups this season.

The American Eagles of Fremont is the other MVAL school with a flag football team. They finished their season 3-18.

Despite the record, sophomore quarterback Rebecca Reyes was a bright spot on the team, recording 580 passing yards and 493 rushing yards.

No. 5 Moreau Catholic Mariners competed in Division III of the NCS bracket, where they beat No. 12 Petaluma Trojans 13-6 on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Senior running back/linebacker Camilla Walton made her presence felt on both sides of the ball. She hauled in six catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, plus seven flag pulls and an interception.

Freshman wide receiver Elliana Martinez tallied 71 yards on 11 receptions, continuing her strong season. She has nine touchdowns and 1,183 receiving yards this year.

The Mariners were on a seven-game losing streak, finishing the season 10-11 before the playoff win. They continued their momentum, in round two of the playoffs where Moreau Catholic faced the Hercules Titans on Oct. 31. The Mariners beat the Titans 31-25.

The Hayward team will press on as they face Cardinal Newman at the semi-finals on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Cardinal Newman High School.
