According to a Fremont Police Department press release, on Friday, July 24 at approximately 3:38pm, Fremont Police dispatch received multiple calls regarding a suspect reportedly holding a firearm and carrying a duffle bag inside Aegis Living, a senior home facility on Walnut Avenue in Fremont.
The suspect was identified as 62 year-old, Edward Oliver Jr.
Multiple police officers were at the scene and were able to locate the suspect who was holding three people hostage in a meeting room of the building. The hostages included his mother, who is a resident at the facility, and his two sisters. During the interaction an “officer-involved shooting” occurred.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No other injuries were reported.
The incident investigation has been handed over to the Department of Justice to determine if Oliver was armed at the time of the shooting and if the use of force was justified.
