San Leandro is hoping to get funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements through an Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC) grant application process. The five projects approved on July 20 should be under six project categories, including bicycle and/or pedestrian projects, road improvement projects and transit-related projects.
According to ACTC, all projects should have project readiness with a funding plan, budget and schedule. Projects that are closer to their construction phase have a higher chance of receiving funding.
The Regional Emergency Stabilization for Coastal Egress is a shoreline protection project that would reconstruct a shoreline slope and restore parts of the Bay Trail. The city is asking for about $3.7 million for the project.
The city’s East 14th Street project would add lights to pedestrian paths from Dutton to Durant Avenue. The proposed project needs nearly $863,000. The proposed Fairway Drive traffic calming project would add protected bike lanes to Doolittle Drive to Nicholson Street. The project needs nearly $1.4 million to continue.
The city’s Safe Routes to School project would improve pedestrian safety for Corvallis, Roosevelt, Washington Elementary Schools and Washington Manor Middle School. The project needs $495,000.
The San Leandro shuttle program project would provide free transportation for commuters during peak time from San Leandro BART to West San Leandro. This project needs nearly $490,000.
City engineer Jayson Imai said during the meeting that funding would be available in 2028.
