Celebrate freedom in the East Bay cities

June 19 marks the day in 1865 when troops arrived in Galvenson, Texas to announce that enslaved people were free. Around the East Bay, cities and organizations have planned to commemorate Juneteenth with events from music and games to a 5K run.

Newark will hold its third Juneteenth Freedom Day on Thursday, June 18. Held at Newark Pavilion, the day will have music, games, arts and crafts, food, vendors and educational exhibits.

Downtown San Leandro will celebrate Juneteenth on Friday, June 19. Hosted by the Downtown San Leandro Community Benefit District and San Leandro Library, this celebration will feature live music, black-owned small business vendors and a poetry slam with students from San Leandro High School.

In Hayward, West Coast Makers and The City Eats are collaborating on the Hayward 5K Medal Run. Participants can choose a 5K run or 1-mile walk and will receive a custom commemorative medal. The event is designed to be accessible, with presale registration starting at $10. After the run, participants can join Hayward’s West Coast Makers’ Hayward Juneteenth celebration, with food vendors, live entertainment and cultural experiences.
