Fall season is coming to an end for high school sports. As some teams call their last games others continue through the North Coast Section playoffs and tournaments. The following teams are just a few who have played in post season tournaments this past week.
James Logan girls’ water polo made it to the North Coast Section Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16. After receiving second place at the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) Championship, the Union City high school qualified for a spot in the Division II North Coast Section (NCS) tournament.
The tournament’s first round game began Wednesday, Nov. 6, with a safe win of 15-6 against Pittsburg High School. The quarter and semifinal games proved to have a closer score of 10-8 against San Marin, and 7-5 against Terra Linda. These three wins led the team to the NCS Championship game on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The team played in the Division II Championship held at the Soda Aquatic Center in Moraga against Marin Catholic. The Colts unfortunately lost, but were not far behind on the score board losing only just two points, 6-8.
On the courtside is the Logan girls’ volleyball team. The team qualified to play in the NCS Division I Tournament after an undefeated season at 14-0 in the Mission Valley Athletic League.
The first-round game was played against Pleasant Grove High School of Elk Grove. The Lady Colts swept each match winning 3-0. The second-round NCS game was a home game for Logan, this time against Foothill High School of Pleasanton. The first two sets of the game were won by James Logan, 19-25 and 21-25. But the third set was pivotal as Foothill dominated and won by 20 points, 25-5. That streak continued into the fourth and final set with Foothill on the upper hand with 25-22 and 15-11. With a final score of 2-3, ended their incredible season with an overall record of 35-4.
On Friday, Nov. 15 Newark Memorial’s football team traveled to play in the Division 6 NCS quarterfinals against Miramonte High School on the team’s home field in Orinda. While Newark Memorial claimed third place in the MVAL standings, the team fell to Miramonte 23-43. After the tough loss Newark Memorial athletics posted to their social media thanking the seniors, coaches, family and fans for the support and sharing, “We’re proud of the fight and heart this team showed all year.”
