Safe routes to school, safer streets and traffic management are on the way to Hayward over the next several years. Hayward City Council approved three Alameda County Transportation Commission grant applications on Aug. 18.
The grants would support three projects in Hayward. The Safe Streets Hayward project on Patrick Avenue and Whitman Street would include sidewalk level bike paths and pedestrian crossing improvements. The city requested about $3.1 million for the project.
The traffic management project includes updating two miles of traffic signals on A Street, between Skywest Drive and Watkins Street. The city requested about $3.7 million for the project.
The Safe Routes to School project is about to reach the implementation phase, but more funding is needed for increased labor and construction material costs. The city is asking for $1 million for the project, which would include high-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions and sign improvements.
The city staff report said grant funding award announcements can happen in May 2027.
