Judge Jeremiah Johnson, a former San Francisco immigration judge fired by the Trump administration, will speak at the League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark and Union City on August 1. Johnson will offer a firsthand perspective on one of the most significant upheavals in the nation’s immigration court system and its human impact.
Johnson was one of more than 100 immigration judges nationwide terminated since 2025, with 15 judges fired in the Bay Area alone. Appointed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions during the first Trump administration, he was dismissed in November 2025.
While still at his desk, he received a termination letter just hours after granting asylum to an indigenous Guatemalan family. On April 30, Johnson was interviewed for PBS Newshour about his travels to Guatemala subsequent to his firing, during which Johnson discussed having retraced that final case by visiting the village where the family had lived.
As vice president of the National Association of Immigration Judges, Johnson has become a vocal critic of the administration’s aggressive approach.
Johnson’s appearance will provide attendees an opportunity to hear directly from someone at the center of the crisis reshaping the nation’s immigration courts. The event is open to the public.
