The Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS) is happy to announce the return of the beloved Day of the Dead exhibit this autumn. The community-driven exhibition has been a highly anticipated display since 2009. The works of local artists, including students, can be viewed at the HAHS Museum from Oct. 1 through Nov. 7.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a special celebration practiced by people throughout the Americas that celebrates life and death through honoring loved ones who have passed.
Special symbols, traditions and themes are associated with the holiday, like monarch butterflies, marigolds and sugar skulls. Those who celebrate believe that the souls of the deceased have returned during a time in which the veil between the worlds of the living and dead are thinnest, and memorialize this brief reunion with food, drink and celebration.
There will be additional programming and events coinciding with the exhibition: On Saturday, Oct. 10, explore a Day of the Dead pop-up shop featuring local artisans.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the museum’s monthly free Family Fun Saturday Storytime and Craft Day will be Day of the Dead-themed, featuring a special storytime followed by crafts for children (and adults) of all ages.
On Saturday, Oct. 31, a special free craft day allows participants to learn about the difference between Dia de los Muertos and Halloween.
