People are getting together Sept. 19 to save the environment. Coastal Cleanup Day is a statewide initiative aimed at keeping waterways clean while saving wildlife. It’s one of the largest annual volunteer events in California. This year is the 42nd anniversary.
Locally, Fremont is hosting its own Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 19 from 9am to 12pm. The locations are Blacow Road near Fremont Boulevard, Grimmer Boulevard and Blacow Road, Roberts Avenue and Carol Avenue, Crandall Creek and Central Park.
Volunteers can sign up at city.fremont.gov/coastalcleanupday. City of Fremont communications and management analyst Luciana Torres said in an email that volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, a reusable bucket and gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent. There are buckets and gloves available to borrow.
Clothing recommendations include sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots, long pants and long sleeves. People should have the Clean Swell App downloaded on their phone before attending the event.
Torres said the event is not just about picking up trash and preventing pollution. “By participating, volunteers help improve the community, clean up local waterways and protect urban wildlife habitats,” she said. “Beyond the environmental benefits, the event offers a chance to build community, spend time outdoors and inspire others to care for and protect public spaces…It is an opportunity to be part of a global movement for cleaner, healthier environments.”
