Union City school renaming continues

Cesar Chavez Middle School committee prepares to choose new name

Walking around Union City, passersby may notice some construction near James Logan High School or near BART. On Oct. 27, the city’s public works department announced Capital Improvement project updates to the city council.

Some updates include road, transit and city building projects. A part-time bus lane next to Logan High School would be active during peak hours. There is pavement and signs that say buses only during certain times. Those times would be from 7 to 9am and 2 to 6pm Monday to Friday and would start early next year.

Quarry Lakes Parkway is expected to be completed and opened by the end of 2028. The project is a multi-modal street with three car lanes, a trail for pedestrians and cyclists, bike lanes, a sidewalk and green space.

I Street near Union City BART would be closed permanently in order to open an east BART entrance with a pedestrian crossing and railroad safety gates. The entrance would open after the closure of I Street, which currently has railroad safety gates. The I Street project would be completed by late 2027 to late 2028.

The Larry Orozco Teen Workshop is getting some needed upgrades. One is an environmental hazard abatement process for lead, asbestos and mold. There are also roof, window and ADA access improvements. The renovations would be finished by December 2027. The Shorty Garcia soccer fields are receiving stadium light improvements and a BART mural project is underway. City staff plan to clean the columns for mural art and obtain the required permits.
