Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) is recognizing 63 students who had perfect scores in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), formerly the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) test.
Students in grades 3 to 8 and 11 take both English Language Arts (ELA) and math in the spring. Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 have to take a science test as well.
Instruction and assessment director Hector Garcia shared a quick presentation about where students have improved, called “bright spots.” He said according to the CAASPP scores, 15 HUSD schools improved in ELA compared to last school year.
The schools that improved by at least 5% were Fairview Elementary, Park Elementary, Schafer Park Elementary and Southgate Elementary. Students in 16 HUSD schools improved in math compared to the last school year. The schools that improved by at least 5% in math were Schafer Park, Bret Harte Middle School, Longwood Elementary, La Vista (formerly Cesar Chavez Middle School) and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.
Many elementary school students received perfect scores in ELA while some middle school students received perfect scores in math.
An award ceremony took place during the Oct. 28 school board meeting where each student was called up by their principal and received a certificate. As more students went up they formed a line in front of the audience. After all the students were called up the school board took a picture with the students. Garcia said the students enjoyed a dinner earlier that day and received special recognition.
