Many dream of going to the moon. In fact, NASA’s Artemis program will land astronauts on the moon in 2027 with an aim to build sustained human presence there.
It is captivating to read stories about the magical life on the moon. Fantasy novels and tales like “Daughter of the Moon Goddess” by Sue Lynn Tan, “Lady Moon” by Rachel Starr Thomson have fascinated readers. In a Hindu context, the moon is personified as Chandra, a lunar deity who represents the mind and emotional tides.
Al Minard, board member of Fremont Cultural Arts Council came up with the idea of conducting a Flash Fiction Writing Contest with the theme “Living on the Moon.” He said, “The operative word in the contest is ‘Fiction.’ This theme was chosen because the United States is talking about sending someone back to the moon. Since no one that we know of has ever lived on the moon, you can create an interesting story about what you think it would be like.”
To read intriguing stories about Living on the Moon, visit Half Price Books, Fremont Hub, on Saturday, Oct. 10. The event is being co-sponsored by Fremont Cultural Arts Council along with Half Price Books, Fremont Creates, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Infinity Care LLC.

Stories of 300 words or less including the title on a single printed paper will be posted on the columns inside Half Price Books. Everyone visiting Half Price Books on that day will be able to read and vote for their five favorite stories. There will be binders of all the stories for those who have difficulty reading the stories posted on the columns. Names of the writers will not be mentioned, so everyone will have to judge based on content.
Voting closes at 5pm. Ballots will be available at the contest table. The names of the winners will be announced around 5:30pm and the details will be posted on the FCAC website the following week. Contestants need not be present to win, but they are definitely encouraged to be there in person to mingle with other writers, collect their prizes and have their photographs taken.
As Al Minard pointed out, “We are sure that everyone has a story to tell and we think people who come into Half-Price Books will enjoy reading them.”
