Stolen UPS truck detained in Fremont

Standoff ends in subject surrender

On the morning of April 23, at approximately 1:32am, Fremont Police officers responded to a call regarding a UPS truck driving erratically on the 5500 block of Cushing Parkway. 

A short pursuit was conducted before the truck became disabled on Grimmer Boulevard north of Auto Mall Parkway.

After the vehicle stopped, the subject barricaded himself inside. Unconfirmed information was provided to officers that the subject was possibly armed. Fremont Police Department Special Response Team and SWAT were on the scene, and negotiators were actively communicating with the subject.

According to Fremont Police, after several hours of negotiation, at 5:45am, the subject was identified by police as Rafael Taniguchi Garcia, a 27-year-old resident of Union City, surrendered to police and was safely detained.

Garcia was arrested pursuant to felony of a vehicle, felony recklessly evading and obstructing, resisting or delaying a peace officer.

He was medically cleared and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
