A “yarn” has a fun double meaning: It can be either a textile or a story. So what better way to start Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month in April than with crocheted squares made by community members?
After gathering contributions and stitching them together (no surprise that expert crocheter Lisa Stambaugh took charge), Fremont Creates held a ribbon cutting on the morning of Friday, April 3, at the intersection of Civic Center and BART Way. Originally, the group had hoped to have enough materials to decorate two trees at both the intersection and in front of Fremont Main Library. It turned out they were able to decorate four trees at each location, as well as some fence posts.

Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan and Washington Health CEO Kimberly Hartz attended the ribbon cutting, along with the Fremont Creates team. Some people who had contributed squares also came by and were delighted to see their work on display.
Art and culture events will continue throughout the month, culminating in a grand finale at Fremont Downtown Event Center on April 26. Events coming up soon include the Fremont Cultural Arts Council’s flash fiction contest and Mission Peak Choir’s Golden Hour benefit concert, both on April 11.
