With so much media attention these days about democracy, have you ever wondered whether our own democracy is strong enough to last? If not, what form of government could replace it? What are the weaknesses in our democracy that could cause it to crumble, and how can they be remedied?
Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of UC Berkeley Law School, contends that the U.S. Constitution, which created our form of government and has succeeded so well for so long, now itself threatens American democracy. In his book No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States he points to the fact that confidence in all branches of the U.S. government is at an all-time low, and that the U.S. is more politically polarized than at any time since Reconstruction.
Professor Chemerinsky has written leading casebooks and treatises about constitutional law, criminal procedure and federal jurisdiction.
Join the League of Women Voters for a video presentation and interview with Chemerinsky. The video runs for one hour and will be followed by a 30-minute moderated discussion.
