Writing children’s books

Award-winning author Jennifer Gennari discusses skills needed to write for kids

Have you ever dreamed about writing a children’s book? Do you have an idea for a story you wish you’d heard when you were young or that you’d love to read to your children or grandchildren now? What’s stopping you?

Writing for children seems like it should be easy.  However, it can be more difficult than writing for adults. Think about your child’s favorite books, and your grandkid’s favorites…the ones falling apart because they’ve been read every night. They’re magical, because their authors understood how to write for children.

On Saturday, Oct. 26 at a FREE and open-to-everyone Zoom meeting, Fremont Area Writers is hosting award-winning children’s author Jennifer Gennari, who will present “READ, NOTE, HOPE: Three Skills You Need to Write Children’s Books.” This is an opportunity to get tips on how to write a book that might just entertain kids and adults for generations.. Knowing your target audience, cultivating the power of observation, and understanding why “hope” and “truth” matter when writing for young readers will all be addressed in the presentation.

Jennifer Gennari is the author of Muffled, a Junior Library Guild selection and a Georgia Children’s Book Award finalist, and My Mixed-Up Berry Blue Summer, a Bank Street Best Children’s Books of the Year selection and an American Library Association Rainbow List title. She divides her time between Vermont and the Bay Area.
