The longest night of the year is coming up. While it’s so dark and cold, people may prefer to stay home. But if they want to go out, there are activities for them.
For the sunrise on the shortest day, Del Valle Park in Livermore is organizing a hike starting at 6:30am at Arroyo Road Staging Area. Along the way, hikers will learn why the shortest day of the year is significant. The hike is strenuous, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Coffee will be provided. On Dec. 2, Coyote Hills will host a drop-in program starting at dusk with hot drinks, s’mores and storytelling around a fire, as well as nature observations and solstice themed crafts. The program starts at 4:30pm at the visitor center. https://www.ebparks.org/parks/coyote-hills
Niles Discovery Church will hold a special Longest Night Service on Dec. 21 at 7:30pm. The theme is light in the midst of darkness, and the service is especially for those dealing with grief or challenges around the holiday season. The service includes a candle lighting. https://nilesdiscoverychurch.org/
