Traditional Indian dance studio livens up NewPark Mall

Studio owners and instructors appear at Newark City Council meeting

Many who visit NewPark Mall may describe the place as bleak and empty. Dance studio Macha Swag Dance plans to liven up the space with music, fitness and fun.

According to the city report, owners of the Bollywood and South Indian dance studio plan to lease a space on the first floor of the mall. Two dance instructors plan to teach up to three one-hour classes in the evenings with 5-15 students each. The classes would be held from 5pm to 9pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm on the weekends.

They’re taking up the space of what used to be a T-Mobile store, which vacated in 2019. This is all part of the city’s NewPark Place Specific Plan, which involves adding vibrant retail, dining, entertainment and community-oriented spaces at the mall. The city report says they hope the business will get more people to visit the mall, as the mall suffers from high vacancy rates.
