Student assembles kindness kits for cancer patients

HERS volunteer gives back to community for Eagle Scout project

Hello! My name is Keerthana Sabhanayakam. I am a junior at Moreau Catholic High School and a volunteer at HERS Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, where I was inspired to launch my Eagle Scout Project. I am currently a Life Scout in Troop 2220, and I created the Kindness Kits Project as part of my journey to achieve the Eagle Scout rank.

On Monday, Sept. 1, I held a workday for my project at Oliveira Elementary School. Over 20 volunteers worked alongside me to complete 50 kits, each containing a handmade blanket, a pouch filled with self-care items, colorful personalized cards with encouraging messages, and various goodies to brighten someone’s day.

With the help of my fellow scouts, we designed the kits to comfort breast cancer patients during medical visits and chemotherapy treatments. Each kit was meant not only to provide practical support, but also to remind patients that the community cares for them and recognizes their strength.

Volunteers and families from the community joined me in organizing materials and preparing the kits, transforming the workday into a true community effort that brought people of all ages together for a cause close to their hearts.

Through this project, I wanted to highlight the importance of compassion, teamwork, and service—and to show how even small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.

HERS’ annual Walk/Run/Yoga fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Quarry Lakes Regional Park.
