Fremont Area Writers (FAW) will be hosting award-winning author, Jane Cleland, at its monthly Zoom meeting on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 2pm to 4pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. The topic of Cleland’s presentation is “The Art of Distraction: Using Red Herrings.”
One of the secrets to successful writing is creating complex and surprising plots. Skilled writers often use a sneaky technique to befuddle readers known as “red herrings.” In the same way a magician uses sleight of hand, a writer can divert a reader’s attention from the actual to the illusionary. If done well, readers will believe what they see on the printed page, even though it’s intended to send them in the wrong direction. Using red herrings is an irresistible and effective way to draw readers in and keep them turning pages.
Jane K. Cleland is an award-winning author who writes both fiction and nonfiction. Her fiction includes the long-running Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery series. Her writing also appears in the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Her nonfiction includes the Agatha-Award-winning bestsellers, Mastering Suspense, Structure & Plot and Mastering Plot Twists. She’s a Contributing Editor at Writer’s Digest Magazine and the chair of the Black Orchid Novella Award (BONA). Cleland teaches writing at the university level, and offers free monthly webinars on the craft and business of writing. More details are available at www.janecleland.com.
