Public art project and holidays embraced in Hayward

New developments and community events offered downtown

As November approaches, the Downtown Hayward Improvement Association (DHIA) continues to keep the neighborhood lively, offering an exciting lineup of new developments and community-focused events.

Welcoming the New Affordable Housing Development

Located on the corner of 2nd and C streets, Pimentel Place is the brand-new affordable housing development for families with income levels ranging from 20%-80% of the local Area Median Income (AMI). Offering 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments, this new development features amenities including an outdoor and indoor community area, on-site laundry, bicycle parking, a children’s play area and on-site supportive services offices which offer wellness programs and a resource coordinator. This new housing development will allow the new residents to explore Downtown Hayward as it’s close to various establishments such as schools, churches, medical offices, banks, groceries, restaurants and a movie theater. In addition, Pimentel Place will also be setting aside 15 units for households with people experiencing chronic homelessness.

Call for Artists: Downtown Hayward Big Belly Art Project

The Downtown Hayward Improvement Association (DHIA) invites local artists and artist teams to submit designs for a unique public art program. They are seeking original artwork to wrap 35 Big Belly receptacles, recently installed in Downtown Hayward, with themes reflecting Hayward’s rich history, cultural diversity and artistic environment.

Artists can submit multiple designs, and the selected artists will each receive $800 (per design) for their final artwork which will be placed on at least one unit for an approximate one-year term. Submissions are open until Friday, Nov. 15 and all designs should align with themes related to Hayward’s history and heritage, the artistic and creative environment of the city, contemporary culture, local landscapes and symbolic landmarks, and historical figures or positive symbols reflecting the diverse and unique experiences of Hayward.

To apply, please include a sketch of proposed artwork, contact information, and any additional materials that showcase your artistic portfolio. For more details and submission guidelines, visit downtownhayward.com or email in**@do*************.com .

Upcoming Events

Throughout this October, the Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS) Museum has been honoring Día de los Muertos with a series of cultural celebrations. To close out this month-long tribute, the museum is hosting a free skull mask event on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11am to 2pm. Community members are invited to join in crafting skull masks, as no Día de los Muertos celebration is complete without them.

It’s time to embrace the holiday spirit! Kick off the season with the Downtown Hayward Association’s annual Light Up the Season event on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the City Hall rotunda. Attendees can enjoy family-friendly activities including games, performances and the traditional tree lighting just after sunset. Throughout the evening, the community will embrace song, dance and musical performances by local schools and other groups along with seasonal displays and a visit from Santa himself.
