The Portola Art Gallery presents “Palo Alto Baylands,” a collection of plein air oil paintings by award-winning artist Edwin Bertolet of Redwood City. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 14, from 1pm – 4pm. In addition, Bertolet will be at the gallery on September 11, as well as by appointment.
Ed Bertolet’s plein air works are evocative of our early regional impressionists who uniquely captured the beauty of California in a direct, distinct, and unmannered style. In his work, Bertolet tries to capture the calm elegance of our local landscape in an unlabored style. Expressive brushwork, subtle color, a sense of light, and a unique sense of serenity are the elements that populate his paintings, as he feels these things best reflect the quiet beauty of the area where we live.
As the artist says, “In my paintings, I try to identify and depict the quiet serenity which is hidden within the landscape around us.”
He continues, “A local treasure, the Palo Alto Baylands is a continual source of beauty and inspiration, and has provided me with ample subject matter for painting. I hope these works will give you a deeper sense of this location’s true value to our community.”
