Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS) is pleased to announce our newest art exhibit, “Barns of the East Bay: From Hay Day to Fading Away,” a series of one-of-a-kind photographs that document the area’s backroads and their agricultural history.
Local photographer Patty Burton began taking photographs of the area’s barns while on long drives with her husband during the Covid lockdown of 2020. She’s always loved barns, and she began documenting the ones she saw on her drives because they told the story of Hayward and the surrounding area’s agricultural history.
Barns are a threatened building type in the Bay Area; some of the buildings in Burton’s exhibit have been demolished since she photographed them. Her photographs capture the unique story of each barn and remind us of the area’s history.
Barns of the “East Bay: From Hay Day to Fading Away” are on view in the HAHS art gallery from now until Feb. 7, 2026.
