Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver is the featured work of the 2024-25 season of One Book, One Community Read (OBOCR). In its 15th year, One Book, One Community Read is a community project of the Fremont Branch of American Association of University Women. The official launch for the upcoming season will be on September 16, 7pm, at Washington West in Fremont. Doors open at 6:30pm.
Margery Leonard, OBOCR Chair, comments, “Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield and Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead have more in common than their alliterative titles. Parallels in plot, characters and theme braid through both books. In setting her novel in contemporary Appalachia, Kingsolver created a Pulitzer Prize-winning best seller. Demon Copperhead is the orphan you can’t help but root for as he makes his way through a troubled adolescence impacted by drug abuse. In 15 years, this is the third time the team has chosen a book by Barbara Kingsolver. This is no coincidence as her books are always topical.”
Program Chair Jeanne Delp states, “Since Demon Copperhead describes the very real crisis of drug misuse, our program will address the impact of opioids on our community. Expert presenters will provide information about community situations and resources for support and treatment.”
Speakers include State Senator Aisha Wahab, Jasmine Baseai, COO of Haller’s Pharmacy, Dr. Larry Nordhoff, Board Member of National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse.
