Ohlone College Welcomes New Vice President of Academic Affairs

Ohlone College is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Raymond J. Gamba as the new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Gamba will officially assume his role on June 17, 2024. With an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades in higher education, Dr. Gamba brings a wealth of experience, passion for student success, and a strong commitment to equity and inclusion.

A Journey of Dedication and Leadership

Dr. Gamba’s career in academia began at Chaffey College, where he taught Introduction to Psychology and Cross-Cultural Psychology. His passion for teaching and commitment to students led him to Fullerton College and subsequently to City College of San Francisco (CCSF). At CCSF, Dr. Gamba excelled as a tenured Psychology Instructor, department chair, and Dean during the college’s accreditation reaffirmation period. His leadership journey continued at West Valley College as the inaugural Dean of Social Science and West Valley Online, and most recently, he served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Connection to Ohlone College

Dr. Gamba expressed his admiration for Ohlone College, stating, “Ohlone has the reputation for student success, a healthy work environment, and a focus on making the student experience the best it can be.” His decision to join Ohlone College was driven by the institution’s dedication to student success and its commitment to creating a positive and inclusive environment.

Inspiration for Leadership

Reflecting on his transition from teaching to leadership roles, Dr. Gamba said, “When you teach, you have a direct impact on the students in that class. As I transitioned to Dean and eventually Vice President of Academic Affairs, the work extends to thousands of students. You want them to feel safe, be heard, be respected, and succeed in any career or educational opportunity they seek.”

Impact on Strategic Direction

Dr. Gamba believes in the power of relationships and student-focused decision-making. “I have a whiteboard in my office with one statement: ‘How does this benefit students?’ This question guides every conversation and decision. Developing an environment where different perspectives and open, honest conversations thrive is essential for student success.”

Commitment to Equity and Inclusion

Throughout his career, Dr. Gamba has been an advocate for equity and social justice. He played a significant role in the President and Vice President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion at West Valley College and the DEI Taskforce at Lake Tahoe Community College. Dr. Gamba’s initiatives, such as leading the Cultural Fluency Teaching Academy, demonstrate his dedication to creating an inclusive campus culture.

Vision for Ohlone College

Dr. Gamba’s vision for Ohlone College is centered on student success and inclusivity. “We need more staff development to provide inclusive classrooms, ensure equal access for differently-abled students, and continue to diversify our faculty and staff. As Vice President of Academic Affairs at Ohlone College, I intend to champion these causes.”

Balancing Professional and Personal Commitments

Dr. Gamba emphasizes the importance of balance between professional and personal life. “My family is first, and my career is second. For over 20 years, I have coached youth sports, particularly baseball, which brings me joy and helps me be a better educator.”

Message to the Ohlone College Community

As he prepares to join the Ohlone College community, Dr. Gamba shares an inspiring message: “Don’t stop believing in yourself and your goals. We, as an educational community, are responsible for guiding and supporting you. You oversee the change.”

Ohlone College is excited to welcome Dr. Raymond J. Gamba and looks forward to the positive impact he will make on our students, faculty, and community.
