On Dec. 14, Newark Symphonic Winds (NSW), under the superb direction of Mr. Richard Wong, will present their Free Holiday Concert and Sing-along, with many new compositions.
The show will begin with an energetic piece, “Christmas Troika” by James Curnow, and continue with tunes from Mariah Carey and Jose Feliciano, as well as songs from the 1950s. The first half of the performance will conclude with all the children invited up to the stage to listen to Newark’s emeritus Mayor, Dave Smith, reading Newell Long’s “’Twas the Night before Christmas.” After the reading, Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance, so be certain to bring the kids and grandkids.
After an intermission, the second half will feature the Pleasantones Clarinet Quartet with Tony Altweis, Rob Mayfield, Sydney Moura and Brenda Nixon. The quartet will perform several songs, including “Frosty the Snow Man,” and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” The symphony will return to the stage, performing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “The Messiah,” arranged by Jack Bullock. The audience will have the chance to join a community sing-along, led by announcer Joan Carter. Sing-along pieces include “Celtic Carol” and “Sleigh Ride.”
Once again, Fremont Bank Foundation is sponsoring the performance. As always, the concert is free, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening—and bring your friends. In past years performances have been sold out, so guests may want to arrive early to get preferred seating.
