Morrison Canyon Road has served as a beloved public pathway since 1877, when county surveyors established it as a non-motorized route connecting Vargas Plateau farms to Washington Township (now Fremont). This scenic path near Vargas Plateau Regional Park provides stunning natural vistas that attract walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, stargazers, equestrians, and drivers alike. A private landowner on Vargas Plateau has requested that the county transfer the easternmost 1,000 feet of Morrison Canyon Road for use as a personal driveway. This request came in 2021, followed by a $10,000 campaign contribution in July 2022.
Community Response
More than 750 community members have signed a petition opposing this privatization and supporting the inclusion of Morrison Canyon Road in the city of Fremont’s 2025 Active Transportation Plan. The city has jurisdiction over the north side of the road and must approve any “vacation” of the public right-of-way.
