Lake Elizabeth Update

Lake Elizabeth in Fremont’s Central Park is a man-made 80+ acre freshwater lake designed for flood control. While approximately 90% of the lake is owned by Alameda County Flood Control, the City has had an operating agreement in place with the County since the late 1960s to maintain it.

On July 3, 2024, the City was notified that a larger than normal number of fish appeared to be floating in the water. While the City experiences a small amount of die off each year during the summer months, the number of fish that died between July 2-3, 2024, was the highest experienced in recent years, with an estimation of approximately 1,000 fish. The City immediately began a clean-up effort which lasted through Saturday, July 6.

On July 11, 2024, the City’s water quality consultant completed a new round of water tests on Lake Elizabeth. While onsite, the consultant also conducted an updated Dissolved Oxygen (DO) test and the DO levels showed significant improvement.

The City of Fremont and Alameda County Flood Control intend to meet in early August to debrief this event.
