Hayward police officer put on administrative leave

Allegations include accepting bribe from brothel

A Hayward police officer has been charged with a felony for allegedly accepting sex and money for keeping an illegal brothel a secret.

Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said on March 18 that Hayward police officer Benjamin Yarbough has been charged with a felony for accepting a bribe. Yarbough allegedly “unlawfully and knowingly accepted $1,000 and free access to sex workers.” KTVU reported that Yarbough is married to Police Chief Bryan Matthews’ sister.

Multiple news outlets reported that Yarbough pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of accepting a bribe, and in return, protecting the illegal brothel. The DA’s office said the allegations are part of a San Jose Police Department investigation involving prostitution. City manager Jennifer Ott said at the March 24 city council meeting that Yarbough was placed on administrative leave as soon as the department found out he was a subject in the investigation.

“The conduct alleged in this case is in no way a reflection of the professional men and women of the Hayward police department who are dedicated to the safety and well being of every member of the Hayward community,” Ott said. She ended her statement by saying Matthews and the police department have her full confidence and support.
