Good Job Governor, but you missed one

Letter to the editor by Zafar Yousufzai

Last week, Governor Newsom signed 10 anti-crime bills into law that appeared in print media. I was glad to read he finally did it—crack down on increasing crimes such as retail theft (smash-and-grab) and auto theft (stealing catalytic converters). Both were alarming in our day-to-day life.

Still, these newly-passed legislative bills are half measures, failing to address the fundamental issues of habitual repeat theft, the Fentanyl epidemic and ongoing homelessness crisis. Unfortunately, some Bay Area businesses have already shuttered their outlets or moved out to new locations in order to protect respective property and customers as well.

I would like to ask the Governor to add one more bill into his list of “Things To Do.” This crime is known as a car “side-show.” While on the surface it looks like a crime no more heinous than a traffic violation, it is dangerous when gang members are playing with the life of an onlooker. Also, it is a bad traffic nuisance for peaceful residents around the chosen location.

In addition, crime reports published in the newspaper say many people were injured at the hands of fun-loving youngsters who are involved and in possession of illegal firearms. I am surprised local law enforcement agencies are very lenient towards them and unsure whether or not they were arrested.

Honorable Governor, please clean up this nuisance (car side-show) from the streets and punish harshly the owners of the vehicles involved in a kind of life/death circus.
