A local video posted to Reddit on Dec. 17 has sparked disgust and concerns from hundreds of commenters.
This video shows a box truck parked outside of a market on Fremont Boulevard where piles of meat are seen stacked on top of each other as two people carry the meat into the meat market.
The market from the video is Maiwand Market. The market off of Thornton Avenue is known for selling halal meat, Afghan pastries and bread.
Maiwand Market store manager, Quis, has recently spoken out about the video. Quis took NBC Bay Area news into the store’s meat storage locker to show them the conditions of how they keep their meat.
Quis also explained the process of how the meat gets from their distributor to Maiwand Market. He told NBC Bay Area, “When they get loaded over there there’s a FDA agent present, so if anything is off or the truck is not up to code, they will never let it load. And then Mayar’s Meat, which is in Livingston, they have refrigerated trucks. All the trucks are refrigerated.”
One of the shared concerns of Reddit commenters was that the truck carrying the meat did not look to be a refrigerated truck.
According to NBC Bay Area, an operations manager from Mayar’s Halal Meats in Livingston said that all trucks are required to be refrigerated and sanitized before every load with an inspector present.
With a similar incident temporarily closing the Milpitas restaurant Pho Love in November, locals seem to have become vigilant on how restaurants and markets are handling food.
