FREMONT, Calif. — A 71-year-old man was fatally stabbed Sept. 18 following a violent altercation on Upper Vintners Circle, according to Fremont police.
Officers responded shortly after noon to reports of two men fighting in the 600 block. When they arrived, they found the older victim unresponsive with a severe stab wound. Despite efforts to provide immediate trauma care, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, identified as 29-year-old Fremont resident Varun Suresh, was detained at the location. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered. Investigators with the department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit determined the incident was a homicide.
According to police, Suresh admitted to targeting the victim because of his age and prior sex offense convictions. Detectives allege that Suresh had been seeking out registered sex offenders as potential victims. During the altercation, police said, the suspect pursued the victim into a nearby residence in order to continue the attack, placing unrelated occupants at risk.
On Sept. 22, Fremont detectives presented the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Suresh has since been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, and residential burglary.
The victim has been identified as David Brimmer.
