Fremont is thinking ahead when it comes to its financial state. The city council received a presentation on Oct. 14 about a survey asking residents what they thought about a possible sales tax ballot measure. The survey was given online and through the phone. Curt Below from FM3 Research presented the findings.
About 634 people were surveyed between Aug. 18 to Aug. 26 via phone call, email and text. The survey was given in English, Spanish and Chinese.
Interviewees were asked if they would support a city sales tax measure. Below said theoretically, the ballot measure would be for the November 2026 election. Half of the people surveyed were asked about a one-cent sales tax and the other a half-cent sales tax.
Sixty percent of respondents supported a half-cent sales tax and 54% of residents supported a one-cent sales tax. The people surveyed said funding from the possible ballot measure should be spent on public safety and keeping streets and public areas clean and safe.
The survey also asked what are the biggest problems Fremont is facing. The top three issues were the cost of living, the cost of housing and traffic on highways and freeways. Another question was what the person valued. The top three responses were children having safe routes to school, improving traffic safety and cleaning up encampments and litter.
