San Leandro Councilmember Brian Azevedo, accused of accepting bribes, wire fraud and making false statements to federal authorities, recently submitted a letter of resignation. He is scheduled to appear in court on felony charges on Feb. 10 and is expected to change his plea to “guilty” according to KQED.
Steve Tavares of East Bay Insiders reports, “Federal investigators have tied Azevedo to Andy Duong of California Waste Solutions, one of four people indicted in the Oakland bribery scandal. Prosecutors allege Azevedo received $2,000 from Duong, which was later deposited into an account connected to a limited liability company Azevedo formed.”
On Feb. 17, the council will start working on getting the council seat filled until the November election.
