Tips to reduce mess when recycling food scraps

Composting has a lot of environmental benefits, but it takes effort to separate food scraps. The City of Union City and Republic Services value the time you take to help our city do the right thing, and meet the goals mandated by SB 1383.

Here are a few tips to help keep composting mess- and odor free:

• Line your pail with paper towels, napkins or paper bags, or layer them in between food scraps to absorb moisture.

• Keep scraps in a small plastic container or bag in the fridge or freezer and empty it into your green cart on collection day. Do not put plastic containers or bags into the green cart.

• Take larger amounts of food scraps and food soiled paper directly to your outdoor green cart.

• Purchase a kitchen compost pail with an odor-reducing filter.

• Put yard trimmings in your cart before adding food scraps.

• Use paper bags to hold scraps in your outdoor cart.

Many residents find these small adjustments make it easier to compost food scraps. For more tips visit StopWaste.org/foodscraps.
